Milestone Years of Service - 40 Years

It's hard to believe that 1986 was 4 decades ago. It was a year where optimism met harsh reality when tragedy unfolded both in the skies and on the ground. People around the world watched as the Challenger Space Shuttle Disintegrated 73 seconds after liftoff, killing all 7 crew members on board. Just 3 months later, a Soviet Union Nuclear Reactor exploded in Chernobyl causing major environmental catastrophe. But the human spirit proved to be unshakable when roughly 5 to 6.5 million people attempted to form the largest human chain ever for "Hands Across America" to fight hunger. The first federal Martin Luther King Jr. Day was observed on January 20. The Oprah Winfrey Show Premiered. This same year, York College welcomed the below employees to support its mission and goals.

ANNOUNCEMENT: WI Call For Proposals

Dear Colleagues,

If you are interested in teaching a Writing Intensive (WI) course at York in the Winter/Spring of 2027, the Writing Intensive Advisory Committee (WIAC) invites your proposals by August 24th, 2026 (Note: To comply with changes in the publication timeline of class schedules, the deadline has been shifted from its traditional early-Fall slot to late-summer).

We are currently reviewing proposals for:

New ad hoc WI sections or courses for Winter/Spring 2027
Continuing ad hoc WI sections or courses for Winter/Spring 2027

Please note that the process for submitting proposals for a permanent WI designation was revised as of Sept. 2024:

The proposer of the WI permanent course should work with the department CCC representative on the proposal. When submitting, please email me (sparasram@PROTECTED) and CC your Department Representative along with the Chair of CCC - Professor Melissa Dinsman (mdinsman@PROTECTED) - to obtain recommendations concerning the WI aspects of the proposal.
If you wish to offer the course as a WI while the permanent designation is pending, please follow the ad hoc WI proposal process for each corresponding semester.

The Writing Across the Curriculum Program (WAC) is particularly interested in expanding the number of lower-division (100- and 200-level) WI offerings. Please note that WI course offerings have enrollment and scheduling implications. Therefore, faculty must have the support of their Department Chair for all proposals submitted to WIAC.

There are three types of Writing Intensive course proposals accepted via our online proposal form:

1) New ad hoc WI course designations are valid for one semester only. To propose a new ad hoc WI section or course:

Attach a course syllabus to the above form. The syllabus should meet the criteria listed on the proposal form webpage.

2) Continuing ad hoc WI designations are valid for one semester only. To propose a continuing ad hoc WI section/course that has been taught by the same instructor:

Please note: A syllabus is not required for a section/instructor pair that has been offered as WI before. A syllabus is required for all other proposals, including continuing ad hoc WIs with a new instructor.

3) Continuing ad hoc WI designations are valid for one semester only. To propose a continuing ad hoc WI section/course with a new instructor:

Again, if you wish to offer the course as a WI while the permanent designation is pending with the CCC, please submit an ad hoc WI proposal.

New WI designation option: WAC is has implemented a new option for submitting ad hoc WI courses. Under this Faculty Designation model:

Department chairs may add the WI designation directly in CourseDog for faculty who appear on the WI Faculty List (this list has been shared with Chairs)
Faculty whose courses have been designated as WI in CourseDog will no longer need to submit an ad hoc WI Course Proposal form or syllabus every semester

(Please note: Only faculty who appear on the WI Faculty List are eligible for this option.) We will slowly phase out the current ad hoc process, with the aim of fully implementing the new faculty designation model by Fall 2027. If you would like to be added to the WI Faculty List, please complete the Writing Intensive Faculty Seminar.

Kindly contact your Department Chair to inquire if they will be designating your courses as WI in CourseDog for the Winter/Spring 2027 semesters. If they will not add the WI attribute in CourseDog, then you will need to submit the ad hoc WI Course Proposal as normal.

Dear Faculty and Staff,

Faculty and researchers are invited to submit manuscripts for a special issue of the Journal of Global Operations and Strategic Sourcing (indexed in Scopus, Web of Science, ABDC Journal Quality List, and Chartered Association of Business Schools) titled “Emerging Perspectives on Technology-Enabled Global Operations and Supply Chain Resilience.”

The issue is guest edited by Dr. Aamir Rashid (Department of Business and Economics, York College - CUNY). This special issue invites conceptual, empirical, and practice-oriented research examining how digital technologies, such as artificial intelligence, analytics, and digital platforms, are transforming global operations and strengthening supply chain resilience. Contributions addressing technology-enabled sourcing strategies, sustainability, circular economy practices, and data-driven supply networks are especially welcome.

Submission window: March 1, 2026 – August 31, 2026. Manuscripts should be submitted through the journal’s ScholarOne system following the journal’s author guidelines.

Milestone Year of Service - 35 Years

35 years ago, 1991 felt like a turning point in history. One era quietly closed while another uncertain future began to take shape. In the beginning of the year, Operation Desert Storm liberated Kuwait and officially ended the Persian Gulf War. In June, The last legal foundations for Apartheid in Africa were Repealed. The World Wide Web became publicly available as an internet service with the first ever website going live on August 6. And in December, the USSR officially dissolved and broke apart into 15 independent countries marking the end of the Cold War. This same year, York College welcomed the below employees to support its mission and goals.

30 years ago, 1996 carried a mix of reassurance and unease. In the United States, Bill Clinton was re-elected and became the first Democrat since Franklin D. Roosevelt to win a second term. In Atlanta, a celebration of the Olympics was shaken by a bombing in Centennial Olympic Park that killed 2 people and injured 111 others. Nintendo 64 was released and USB was launched. On July 5^th, the first cloned mammal, Dolly the Sheep, was born. This same year, York College welcomes the below employees to support its mission and goals.

News: Neuroscience Research Puts Spotlight on Biology Department

Dr. Margaret MacNeil of the Biology Department was recently interviewed by science journalist Dr. Andy Ridgway about a new paper published in Neuroscience, the flagship journal of the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO). The work was featured in a research spotlight on the IBRO website in March and highlights the team’s findings on the potential of a patented, mitochondria-directed peptide, HDAP2, to protect vision in glaucoma and other optic neuropathies.

Dear Faculty and Staff of York College,

The State of New York, Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government (COELIG) requires all State employees (full- and part-time) to complete ethics training annually. Employees must complete a "live" training once every other year, and may take an online "refresher" course during the intervening years. For more information about the online course, and to determine if you are eligible to take the refresher course in 2026, please go to Training - Legal Affairs and Labor Relations - York College.

In order to bring all employees of York College into compliance, we are scheduling several "Live" (via Zoom) ethics training sessions in May. For those employees who must complete the Comprehensive Ethics Training Course (CETC) in 2026, we have scheduled online ethics training sessions on:

Tuesday, May 5, 2026, 10 a.m. - noon
Wednesday, May 13, 2026, 3 p.m. - 5 p.m.

Additional training sessions will be scheduled in the coming months. These are live training sessions, and individuals who attend will be required to attend the full training and confirm their continued attendance periodically during the training.

Here are the key purchasing deadlines and other important dates for the FY 2026 Year-End Close. Please ensure that this information is shared with relevant individuals within your departments. Note that the dates outlined in this document reflect CUNY’s deadlines for both Tax Levy and Non-Tax Levy activities.

Procurement:

• May 15, 2026: at this time, no more requisitions can be submitted for processing for both Tax-Levy and Non-Tax Levy (Related Entities) All purchase requisitions for FY 2026 must be fully approved and received in the Procurement Office by May 15, 2026, at 5:00 PM. This allows adequate time to process and issue purchase orders, ensuring goods and services are received by the June 30, 2026 fiscal year-end deadline.

• June 12, 2026: Last day submit Marketplace order for Grainger/Intivity, S&B computer and Complete Books & Media punchouts.

• Confirming Orders: Do not place confirming orders (orders made without a purchase order) All purchases must be approved by the Procurement Office.

• June 30, 2026: Last day to receive good and/or services for Fiscal Year 2026.

• Outstanding Purchase Orders: Please review your current purchase orders to ensure that all deliveries will be made by June 30, 2026. Any items received after this date will be charged to FY 2026.

It’s official, 2001 was a quarter of a century ago. This year unfolded in a way that permanently altered how the world understood security and uncertainty. In the United States, George W. Bush began his presidency, stepping into office just 8 months before the September 11 Attacks. The coordinated series of suicide attacks across 3 states perpetrated by Al-Qaeda resulted in many fatalities and the War in Afghanistan. Wikipedia launched on January 15, both Mac OS X and Windows XP were released. Apple Released their first portable iPod on November 10. In 2011, the 15 years ago was a year where the world was simultaneously celebrating and grieving. In the U.S., NASA completed its final space shuttle mission, ending the US Space Shuttle Program after 30 years. Apple co-founder, Steve Jobs, passed away. And the Occupy Wallstreet movement began in New York City. In London, the internationally broadcasted Royal Wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton became one of the most watched events in modern history. This chart below reflects our Fall 2026 numbers as of May 3, 2026.

This report compares our enrollment with the other CUNY colleges.

Our Enrollment Target is 6,720 students; we are currently at 1,893 students.

We are 23.1% higher in our enrollment than we were on the same date last year.

V-READY will be available to students on Wednesdays from 9:30-4pm and Fridays from 9:30-2pm so students can get 'registration ready' for Summer and Fall 2026.

Dept Listening Sessions - EM along with Advisement and Registrar (as requested) has met with 8 departments: Accounting & Finance, Behavioral Science, Biology, OT, Social Work, Teacher Education Nursing and Exercise Science. I encourage other departments to request a listening session so we can meet and discuss how EM can be helpful in removing barriers for our students.

National Award Recognizes Nursing Professor’s Pioneering Therapy Dog Research

Congratulations to Nursing Professor Dr. Valerie Esposito Kubanick who was recently named the recipient of the 2026 American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) Award for Innovation, Individual. The honor is presented annually to members “who demonstrate excellence in psychiatric-mental health nursing practice, education, research, leadership, and community engagement.” Dr. Esposito Kubanick will be featured and celebrated throughout the year and will receive the award as a guest at the APNA Conference in October.

Poli Sci Professor Advances Career-Connected Learning in Germany

Professor Robin Harper of York College, CUNY’s the Behavioral Sciences – Political Science, recently delivered an invited lecture at Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences in Germany as part of a 13-lecture series on the theme of “knowledge justice” (i.e., the injustices of lacking or being denied information).

Network upgrade on Friday, May 8th at 4 pm

As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance network speed and reliability, we will be upgrading York College’s connection to the CUNY optical ring on Friday, May 8 at 4:00 PM. This network connects all CUNY campuses and provides access to the Internet.

This upgrade will increase our bandwidth from 20 Gbps to 200 Gbps, significantly expanding capacity. While users may not notice an immediate difference in everyday performance, certain applications and services may experience improved responsiveness. Most importantly, this enhancement will strengthen the overall reliability and resiliency of the network across CUNY.

The scheduled maintenance window is 4:00–5:00 PM. We do not anticipate any service disruptions during this time.

Dear Members of the York College Community and the York College Occupational Therapy Community,

It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that I share the passing of Dr. Michael DiMaio, a long‑time adjunct faculty member in the Department of Occupational Therapy, a valued colleague, and a close personal friend.

For more than two decades, Dr. DiMaio taught anatomy with extraordinary passion and enthusiasm, touching the lives of hundreds of Occupational Therapy students. He was more than an instructor; he was a mentor, a guide, and a steady presence whose love for teaching was evident in every lecture and every interaction. His impact reached far beyond the classroom through the depth of knowledge he shared and the example of compassion, dedication, humility, great sense of humor, and deep faith that he lived every day. His influence on our students and our community is immeasurable and enduring.

Hello York College Family,

The CUNY Clash Final Competition is this Friday, May 1st at the CUNY/Amazon office, 12 West 39th St., Manhattan, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fifteen CUNY students will present their business pitches for the chance to win up to $20,000 in cash prizes. There will be finalists representing 9 CUNY schools: Brooklyn College, York College, Baruch College, City Tech, CCNY, Hunter College, CUNY Grad Center, Macaulay Honors, and CUNY SPS. Celebrate Earth Day with York College-CUNY!

Join us on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, for a special Earth Day planting project starting on the York College Plaza! Bring your green thumbs and help us fill the planters from 2:00 to 4:00 PM.

This meaningful initiative, organized by the Office of the President, Institutional Advancement/Marketing & Communications, and the Senate Committee for Campus Environment & Facilities will honor the memory of the late Professor and Alumna Winsome Smickle of the Department of Behavioral Sciences. Professor Smickle devoted many of her non-teaching hours to lovingly caring for the plants. To celebrate her legacy, members of her former department will also join us in her honor and that of another colleague, Professor Susan Austin.

We look forward to seeing you there for this “greening” event!

Knowledge of political and policy-making processes, and ways by which citizens influence and shape the public policy process
Recognition of Leadership self efficacy and approaches of political and policy leaders
Understanding of the critical importance of diversity in enriching democratic political participation
Awareness and preparedness of career options in the fields of politics and public policy
Skills of developing and organizing a campus or community engagement project

NEW Leadership® is a non-partisan program that provides the tools to become effective leaders in the political arena regardless of academic interests or career path.

Eligibility and Application Process

The program is open to undergraduate students (or recent graduates) enrolled in any New York State college of university AND to all New York State residents who are enrolled as undergraduates in out-of-state schools
Applicants should demonstrate interest and experience in developing leadership skills and are expected to have at least 3.0 GPA. Under certain circumstances, applicants with GPA below 3.0 will be considered, however, they must provide strong justification for why they should be considered
The program is provided free of charge to all participants
Applications and all supporting documents must be submitted to the Center for Women in Government & Civil Society
The Center for Women in Government & Civil Society strongly encourages women from all backgrounds-including people of color, LGBTQ+, gender non-conforming/non-binary individuals, people with disabilities, first generation college students, and international students-to apply to the NEW Leadership® New York
