Dear York College Community,

I am writing to ask everyone to remain cautious when crossing local streets around York College, especially Guy R. Brewer Boulevard, at and near campus intersections. Guy R Brewer continues to experience heavy traffic volume, speeding, red light violations, and distracted driving, all of which present ongoing safety concerns for our students, faculty, staff, and neighbors.

Over several years, Chief Assmann from Public Safety has worked closely with the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) and campus administration to advocate for safety improvements along Guy R. Brewer Boulevard and throughout the campus perimeter. These efforts have included traffic studies, signal timing reviews, and interim safety measures already implemented by DOT. While this progress is meaningful, additional long-term solutions are still needed to further improve pedestrian and roadway safety.

York College continues to strongly advocate for enhanced traffic-calming and enforcement measures, including:

On our end, York College Public Safety has, and will continue to, increase officer presence along Guy R. Brewer Boulevard and surrounding perimeter areas. We are also coordinating with NYPD Traffic to assist with patrols and to issue summonses for traffic violations in the area. These efforts are focused on addressing dangerous driving behavior and improving overall safety around our campus.

We also ask members of the campus community to report any safety concerns, traffic violations, near misses, accidents, or other related incidents to York College Public Safety. Documented reports are an important part of our advocacy efforts and provide valuable data that helps reinforce the need for additional safety interventions and continued action by the Department of Transportation.

DOT has also released a community survey for the Greater Jamaica area. Community input plays a critical role in advancing transportation safety projects. I strongly encourage you to take a few moments to complete the survey. Every voice matters, and collective participation helps move these important projects toward the finish line.

A link to the survey is included below.

Thank you for your continued awareness, cooperation, and partnership as we work together to keep our campus and surrounding community safe.
