Greetings York College Community,
York College Public Safety is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and faculty. Areas of immediate concern include the pedestrian crosswalk on Guy R. Brewer Blvd between Archer Avenue and Liberty Avenue in front of York College. Another concern is our off-campus exterior street lighting conditions.
Our team has been actively petitioning the Department of Transportation (D.O.T) to advance the installation of safety measures along this crucial pathway from the Academic Core Building to the East Parking Lot. Thanks to our persistent efforts, the D.O.T has reported small yet impactful changes. First, earlier this year, noise devices were installed in the stop lights to assist visually impaired people in crossing the road. Secondly, as of last week, the stop light signal at the Guy Brewer Blvd East parking lot now has a leading Pedestrian Interval, providing pedestrians with an additional 15 seconds to cross the intersection without any conflict from vehicles before the light turns green for cars exiting the parking lot. Furthermore, the D.O.T. is addressing a sunken manhole cover at the north crosswalk, which is currently under inspection for repair. While the D.O.T. continues to investigate additional safety measures, these improvements are the first step towards a safer Guy Brewer Blvd.
Although this is a great start, I ask that we unite our voices to effectively ensure the continued prioritization of these projects. Your input is invaluable. By sharing your experiences and concerns through this survey, you help us provide the Department of Transportation with additional compelling data to support critical safety enhancements such as speed bumps, enhanced signage, adjusted speed limits, and improved road markings. Please take a few moments to complete the attached survey.
