Happy Summer Colleagues:
I hope everyone is enjoying the warmer weather and (slightly) slower pace of Summer. The Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management is in high gear assisting students with Direct Admission, Registration, and (believe it or not) Orientation.
Thank you to our Faculty who volunteered to participate in Express Advisement, which was offered to continuing students, concurrently with Express Enrollment for our new students. Thank you to our colleagues in the Welcome Center, “Big Five “ offices, and Student Affairs for your diligence in hosting weekly Express Enrollment sessions since March. Students who have questions, outstanding balances, and any other enrollment service needs can have their issues resolved quickly and efficiently. The goal for each student who visits during these days is to leave the campus registered. Thankfully, our registration reports indicate that our new first-year, transfer, and readmit students are doing just that- and at higher rates compared to last year.
As of the last week of June, 488 continuing students (admitted in Fall 22, Spring 23, Fall 23, Spring 24), with GPAs greater than 2.0, no bursar holds, and less than 105 credits earned, remain unregistered. These students will receive “nudges” via text, email, social media and mail to remind them to register while their classes are still available. If you advise students, please encourage them to take the next step and register for Fall today!
Thank you!
York’s Financial Aid Team continues to support the families of South Jamaica with FAFSA completion assistance. Most of the visits to the Welcome Center stem from Financial Aid inquiries. The NY FAFSA District Data shared by CUNY Central as of 5/31/24 indicates that two of our main districts, District 26 and District 28, still show large application gaps of 15% compared to the previous year’s submissions. With continuous FAFSA boot camps three times per week since Mid-March and public facing FAFSA completion events in May and in July 2024, we will continue to close that gap and see direct increases to our enrollment as a result. To support these efforts, the College will:
- Increase Outreach: Increase efforts in contacting and assisting the unregistered students to ensure they register for courses and complete FAFSA and HESC applications.
- Continue FAFSA Campaigns: Continue FAFSA bootcamps, host another CUNYFast Public FAFSA completion event on Saturday July 18, and utilize support from Thurgood Marshall Foundation to assist students and families with FAFSA filing.
Again, thank you so much for your continued support in improving our Enrollment!
Warmly,
Karen
