October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, an international initiative designed to empower individuals to take proactive steps to protect their online security. This year, the theme is “Secure Our World,” emphasizing the importance of safeguarding our personal data and digital interactions amid increasing cyber threats. York is excited to support this global effort in partnership with CUNY, US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA).
Throughout October, you will receive weekly messages on four key cybersecurity behaviors:
Week 1 – Use Strong Passwords and a Password Manager
Week 2 – Turn on Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Week 3 – Recognize and Report Phishing
Week 4 – Update your Software
This week the focus is on why having a secure password is so important:
1. Importance of Strong Passwords: Strong passwords are crucial for protecting electronic accounts and devices, ensuring the safety of sensitive personal and professional information. This includes non-public university data.
2. Complexity Matters: Complex passwords with a mix of letters (both uppercase and lowercase), numbers, and symbols are more secure, as they are harder for hackers to guess.
3. Password Length: Longer passwords are safer, as they are more resistant to brute force attacks. A minimum of eight characters is recommended.
4. Abbreviated Phrases: You can create memorable and secure passwords by using abbreviated phrases or sayings that are meaningful to you.
5. Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Whenever possible, use 2FA for an extra layer of security, which may involve providing a PIN, receiving a code via email or mobile phone, or using biometrics like fingerprints or voiceprints.
6. Regular Password Changes: Changing your passwords regularly reduces the risk of compromise. Avoid recycling old passwords for different accounts and devices.
In essence, strong, complex, and unique passwords, combined with additional security measures like 2FA, play a vital role in safeguarding your information from cyber threats and hackers.
