October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, an international initiative designed to empower individuals to take proactive steps to protect their online security. This year, the theme is “Secure Our World,” emphasizing the importance of safeguarding our personal data and digital interactions amid increasing cyber threats. York is excited to support this global effort in partnership with CUNY, US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA).
This week the focus is on the importance of turning on Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA):
Enhanced Account Security
MFA adds an extra layer of security beyond just a password. Even if a hacker steals or guesses a password, they won't be able to access the account without the second authentication factor, such as a code sent to a phone or an authentication app.
Protection Against Phishing Attacks
Phishing attacks trick users into giving away their passwords. With MFA, even if a user falls victim to a phishing scam, the attacker still needs access to the second authentication factor, making it significantly harder to compromise accounts.
Reduces Impact of Password Breaches
In the event of a data breach where passwords are leaked, MFA ensures that stolen passwords alone cannot grant access to your accounts. This reduces the overall risk of identity theft and fraud.
Compliance with Security Policies and Regulations
Many organizations and industries require MFA for compliance with cybersecurity standards like PCI DSS, HIPAA, or GDPR. Activating MFA helps institutions meet these regulatory requirements and avoid penalties for non-compliance.
Mitigates the Risk of Unauthorized Access
MFA is effective in protecting against unauthorized access from cybercriminals who try to log in from different devices or locations. This is especially important in environments with sensitive data or critical infrastructure, such as educational institutions, hospitals, or financial services.
Activating Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) is crucial for enhancing cybersecurity, especially during Cyber Security Awareness Month and underscores its role in safeguarding digital identities and critical systems.
