Dear Colleagues,
Back in July, York IT and CIS began working on an important security upgrade: enabling Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for the GlobalProtect VPN client. We encountered some technical challenges and decided to pause the rollout until our vendor confirmed the update’s stability. We are now ready to move forward with this critical security enhancement.
MFA is already used for access on other platforms including M365, will now secure your remote access to York College computers via VPN.

New to VPN? Follow These Steps
- Review the Guide and Video: Follow the detailed instructions here: MFAVPN-Guide
- Download Microsoft Authenticator: Get the app on your phone if you haven’t already.
- Set Up MFA: Use the guide to configure MFA for the VPN.
- Keep the Profile: Do not delete your VPN profile after setup to avoid login issues.
Previously Setup VPN back in July? Follow These Steps
If you used the VPN in July and already downloaded the Microsoft Authenticator app, follow these steps to connect:
- Update the VPN Address: Change your GlobalProtect address from ycvpn.york.cuny.edu to vpn.york.cuny.edu.
- Log in: Click "Connect" on GlobalProtect and enter your CUNYlogin credentials when prompted.
- Respond to Location Prompt: Select "Allow" when prompted, or access will be blocked.
- Click on Login Method: click on OTP link
- Enter the MFA Code: Open Microsoft Authenticator on your mobile device, retrieve the code, and enter it in the code prompt.
- Complete the Connection: A Palo Alto page may appear, confirming you’re connected. From there, you can use Remote Desktop to access your work computer with your York credentials.
Accessing Other Systems Without VPN
You do not need the VPN to access systems like:
- CUNYBuy
- CUNYfirst
- Email
- HR/Assist, PR/Assist, or AEMS (Use the offsite links available on the York website.)
