Dear Faculty Members,
The University and York College are aware that Governor Hochul has signed an executive order declaring a disaster emergency in the state of New York. This order, which can be viewed
here (https://www.governor.ny.gov/sites/default/files/2025-02/EO_47.pdf), includes the activation of the National Guard to support authorities in ensuring the safe operations of correctional facilities across New York State due to a strike by corrections officers.
In light of this, we would like to remind you of CUNY's policy on activation and deployment for students who may be affected by this order. If you have a student who receives personal activation orders for deployment, whether overseas, stateside, or for base training (after the drop deadline), please follow these guidelines:
- The grade that the student has earned up to the point of activation may be granted at the time of activation if they have met the 13-week mark in the semester.
- Students can make arrangements with the instructor to make up work for the course.
- Students can work with their professor to obtain the grade of “Incomplete” as they attempt to complete the work they will miss. Please refer the Service member to the school's policy about “Incomplete” grades and how they will apply should they not be able to make up the material.
If the student is graduating at the time of activation, the designated authority/Graduation Auditor (Registrar) at their school may grant up to 12 credits from their JST transcript as military elective credit to assist in meeting the graduation goal. Please refer to your individual CUNY college and degree programs to inquire about required courses per degree.
Please note that activation of a student's Reserve Unit or Base/Command differs from personal activation/orders. Students should not withdraw from courses unless they receive specific orders from the Department of Defense on activation.
Thank you for your attention to this matter and for your continued support of our students.
