The Campus Community,
We want to take a moment to share the progress we’ve made, the challenges we’re working through, and the important initiatives we’re focusing on as we continue to enhance the safety of our campus. Our goal is to be transparent, to keep you informed, and to show how far we’ve come while recognizing the work that still lies ahead.
Emergency PA System Upgrade: One of the key improvements we’ve made is the implementation of new emergency announcement procedures. We’re currently installing an IP-based speaker system that will seamlessly integrate with our existing emergency PA system. This upgrade will allow us to communicate quickly and clearly with everyone on campus during an emergency. We’re thrilled to bring this essential system fully online in the near future.
Camera System Enhancements: We’re working hard to improve security by adding more cameras across campus. While we wait for capital funding to support the installation of over 200 additional cameras and new access controls, we’ve already made significant strides by installing 18 new cameras in key locations. These cameras will help ensure that our campus is safe and secure for everyone. We know that a smooth and secure visitor check-in process is essential. That’s why, in collaboration with IT, we’re developing a new portal that will allow Faculty & Staff to register guests in advance, with real-time updates displayed at the gate for our officers. This new system will streamline entry, making it easier for officers to identify and verify visitors, which is a major step forward in campus security.
Officer Wellness Program: The well-being of our officers is just as important as the well-being of the community we serve. That’s why we’re launching a comprehensive wellness program to support our officers’ physical and mental health. Healthy, well-prepared officers will always be ready to respond to your needs, ensuring that we maintain the highest level of service and support.
Improving Campus Roads with DOT: Together with the Department of Transportation (DOT), we’ve been working to improve the roads around our campus. We’re focused on better lighting, speed bumps, and even the possibility of red-light cameras. We’re also meeting with local elected officials to expedite these improvements and ensure that our campus is as safe as possible, both for pedestrians and drivers. Please continue to report unsafe traffic conditions as these reports help drive our mission forwad in obtaining these much neded improvements in our community.
New Parking Tags on the Way: We’re excited to announce a campus-wide contest to design a new parking tag, which will replace the current student stickers. Keep an eye out for a survey that will allow you to voice your opinion on this new design. We want something that truly represents our community, and your input will help shape it.
Officer Training and Professional Development: We believe in continuous improvement. To ensure our officers have the tools they need to serve effectively, we’ve enhanced our training programs. This year, we’re rolling out new sessions focused on de-escalation techniques and leadership, equipping our team to handle any situation with skill and professionalism. CUNY Public Safety is preparing to introduce officer-worn body cameras, a step that will boost safety, strengthen accountability, and elevate professionalism while providing a valuable training resource.
Focused Patrols: We’ve implemented focused patrols in high-activity areas to better meet the needs of our campus community. This initiative has already led to a significant decrease in disturbance calls to the library, the removal of drug paraphernalia from the campus perimeter, and a sharp reduction in vehicle break-ins in the surrounding area. Additionally, adding an officer presence during the 5pm rush to the Guy Brewer area has reduced the number of reports regarding pedestrian safety during one of the busiest times of day. We remain committed to enhancing campus safety and proactively addressing any emerging challenges.
Collaboration with NYPD: Our partnership with NYPD and Commanding Officer Clement from the 103pct. continues to grow, ensuring that we work together to maintain safety on and around campus. These strong relationships have proven invaluable in responding quickly and effectively to incidents and ensuring that campus safety remains a top priority.
Traffic Safety: Managing the Flow: In addition to road improvements, we’ve taken steps to improve traffic flow on campus, especially during busy times. We’ve had an officer stationed most days during the evening rush hour to help manage traffic at the main parking lot. This has helped reduce congestion and improve the overall flow and increase safety.
Scam Awareness and Active Shooter Training : As part of our commitment to keeping everyone informed and prepared, we’ve launched a scam awareness campaign to educate the community about how to avoid scams. We’re also planning active shooter safety training for staff and students to ensure everyone is ready in the event of an emergency.
Looking Ahead : We’ve made great strides in improving both campus and perimeter safety, but we know there’s still more to do. We’ll continue working on these initiatives, addressing any new challenges, and striving to make our campus a safer place for all. I’m proud of the work we’ve done so far, and I’m grateful for your support as we continue to make progress.
Thank you for being a part of our community, and as always, please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions, concerns, or feedback. Together, we’ll keep working to create a campus where everyone can feel safe and supported.
Best,
Chief James Assmann.
