The York College community gathered yesterday in honor of , a powerful global movement dedicated to raising awareness about sexual assault and standing in solidarity with survivors. This annual observance was inspired by a 1998 court ruling in Italy where a young woman's sexual assault case was overturned because she was wearing tight jeans—the court claimed she must have helped remove them, thereby implying consent. Outraged by this injustice, people around the world began wearing denim to protest victim-blaming and support survivors, and thus, Denim Day was born.
