Dear Campus Community,
Yesterday many of our fellow York colleagues and students were bracing for the impact of Hurricane Melisssa on their island homes. Today they are waking up to images and news of the devastation that has been caused and projected as the storm continues to move throughout the Caribbean. What is even more difficult, is the inability to speak to loved ones because of damage to communication systems. My understanding from checking in with students, faculty and staff yesterday is that recovery planning is already underway. Until we understand how we may best be able to assist, I am asking you to keep them, their families and countries impacted by the storm in your thoughts and prayers.
Having experienced hurricanes directly, as well as been where memebers of our college community are as they wait to hear from their loved ones, I can tell you that it is a difficult place to be. I want to take a moment to acknowledge the emotional, physical, and logistical toll this storm may have on many of our colleagues and students. Whether directly impacted or supporting loved ones from afar, this is a time of uncertainty and stress for many.
By now employees should have recieved information from HR if you to need someone to talk to; and students; students you should have received information regarding Counseling Center.
In moments like these, our strength lies in our compassion. I encourage each of us to be especially mindful of one another—extend grace, offer support, and be patient. A kind word, a listening ear, or a simple gesture of understanding can make a meaningful difference.
Many thanks,
