The York College Community,
We’re pleased to share some exciting news marking a major step forward in our campus safety and modernization efforts.
York College has officially received funding approval from the New York City Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for the replacement of our antiquated CCTV and access control systems with a state-of-the-art, industry-standard security network.
This project will introduce over 150 new cameras, keyless entry, and advanced lockdown and room-opening capabilities designed to keep our community safe, secure, and connected.
This achievement reflects the strong partnership between Public Safety and Facilities Management, with continued collaboration and advocacy from Chief James Assmann and Director Onyekachi Akoma, whose teamwork and persistence helped bring this project to life.
Special appreciation is also extended to Stephen Barrera and Specialist Darrell Fyffe of the Public Safety Department for their research, technical insight, and ongoing maintenance of the current systems, which have been vital to supporting this upgrade and ensuring operational continuity.
The initiative will also move forward in collaboration with the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY) as it enters the implementation phase.
While several steps remain before construction begins, we are moving ahead with the goal of having the new system in place by Fall 2026.
This is a proud moment for York College and a clear example of what we can accomplish together in our shared mission to create a safer, smarter, and more secure campus for everyone.
Additional information will follow as we get closer to the implementation phase.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.
