Dear York College Community,
IT continues to move forward on major technology efforts that support the campus community, with sustained attention on operational excellence and optimal service delivery.
New Computer Distribution Plans
Information Technology will soon release the formal distribution plan for the new computer systems arriving on campus. In developing this plan, priority consideration has been given to systems that present the greatest operational risk—specifically those that are out of warranty, no longer supported, or classified as below standard. The replacement process commenced in June with the deployment of a limited number of early-arrival units, and it will now advance with the broader rollout of the new systems currently being delivered. Departments are being notified ahead of time as replacements requires in some circumstances backup of files, security access, office access and other house keeping needs.
Student Laptop Loaner Pilot Program
For any who may have missed it, as of November 3rd, York College successfully launched its Laptop Loaner Pilot Program, providing short-term laptop access to students and promoting greater equity and flexibility in learning. The program supports students who may lack consistent access to reliable technology or who require temporary access for special projects and assignments, ensuring they have the tools necessary to stay engaged both on and off campus. Students can go to Laptop Loaner Pilot for information on device availability and reserving. A poster has been created by our Institutional Advancement Office to promote this pilot effort. Wireless Network Feedback Update
York Wi-Fi continues to be a significant area of focus for both students and the Office of Information Technology. Ongoing feedback and discussions have informed several improvements in how IT monitors, reports on, and responds to issues related to this critical campus-wide service. As a result of these efforts, IT has identified and prioritized more than 15 locations where Wi-Fi infrastructure is being realigned to address coverage concerns. In addition, an additional 10 locations have been elevated on the schedule for new antenna installations to further strengthen overall connectivity.
In addition, IT created a Quick Form for reporting “in-the-moment” Wi-Fi issues, allowing our team to capture real-time data and respond more effectively to connectivity concerns. The student feedback also helped produced a WiFi Best Practices Guide, helping users better configure their personal devices for optimal performance on the York Wi-Fi network. We are engaging our Institutional Advancement Office to help us produce posters that will help navigate wifi connectivity and post them inside of student support offices for insuring everyone knows not only how to connect, but best connectivity options that often get missed during the critical moment when you need wireless access the most. Xerox Copier Replacement Project
We are still expecting shipments of new Xerox copiers in December 2025. However, we are updating our deployment plans due to the number of new computers coming in so that we are able to combine efforts where we can. Just like the computers, we expect to have a deployment plan for the copiers made available soon. We are waiting on Xerox to give the green light, so we get the appropriate models in the right locations. We expect to have a web page dedicated to both the computers and copier plans for easy follow-up by our community.
QLess Virtual Queuing Upgrade
Staff training sessions for the upgraded QLess virtual queuing system are being scheduled throughout this month, followed by a phased rollout beginning in January 2026. This approach is intended to ensure a smooth transition, promote user readiness, and support broad adoption across participating departments. Upon full implementation, the upgraded system will significantly enhance communication among students, departments, and IT support, resulting in a more efficient, connected, and responsive service experience. Initial feedback from those who have previewed the new platform has been very positive, and we anticipate a successful deployment.
Student Technology Fee Web Page Update
The Student Technology Fee (Tech Fee) web page was recently updated and restructured to enhance transparency, participation, and ease of access. The site now features clearly organized sections for Committee Members, Financial Reports, Meeting Minutes, and Meeting Schedules, ensuring consistent and open communication with the campus community. Access is available through York College credentials, and the page includes detailed information on eligible proposal types along with step-by-step submission instructions. The first Tech Fee Committee meeting occurred November 12th, marking the start of the new cycle of project reviews and planning. Current pending proposals which were discussed will be moving forward based on the committee's vote. This will be reflected on the website this week. 24th Annual CUNY IT Conference
IT is proud to announce that YorkGPT has been selected for a follow-up presentation at this year’s 24th Annual CUNY IT Conference. This recognition reflects the strong interest across CUNY in York College’s leadership in AI innovation and our commitment to developing solutions that directly enhance student and administrative experiences.
We are equally excited to celebrate the six additional presentations accepted from York College faculty and staff. Having seven presentations from our institution in a single year is a noteworthy achievement and a testament to the extraordinary work happening across our campus. This year’s conference offers an important platform for York College to demonstrate to the greater CUNY community that we are not only embracing technology but helping shape its future. Our presenters exemplify the innovation, creativity, and commitment that inspire our students to pursue excellence and engage with emerging technologies that will define the next generation of learning and service.
IT extends its sincere appreciation to all members of the campus community for your ongoing feedback and partnership. Our progress is possible only through shared commitment and collaboration. Together, we can continue advancing York College’s technological landscape and ensure meaningful improvements that benefit us all.
