As part of our commitment to keeping the York College community informed, we are sharing a reminder of the College’s established protocols regarding access to campus by external law enforcement agencies.
York College remains committed to the safety, rights, and well-being of every member of our community. As a matter of law and CUNY policy, any federal, state, or local law enforcement agency, including agencies such as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) seeking entry to non-public areas on campus must present a valid judicial warrant signed by a judge. Administrative warrants or other non-judicial documents are not sufficient to authorize access.
If any outside law enforcement agency requests access to campus facilities, or seeks information about a member of our community, they will be directed to the Department of Public Safety and senior college leadership. The College’s Office of Legal Affairs will be consulted to review and verify the legal sufficiency of any documentation before any action is taken. No enforcement activity will be permitted absent proper legal authority.
Members of the campus community who encounter external law enforcement officials on campus should immediately contact the York College Department of Public Safety at 718-262-2222 so that the matter can be addressed in accordance with established procedures.
We understand that issues of this nature may raise concern. Please be assured that the College follows clear legal standards and established protocols to ensure that any request for access is handled lawfully, appropriately, and with full regard for the rights of our community.
Thank you for your continued cooperation and commitment to maintaining a safe, respectful, and secure campus environment.
Yours in Safety,
Chief James Assmann
Director of Public Safety
CUNY York College
