Dear York College Community,
We are sharing an important cybersecurity advisory from NYC Cyber Command regarding increased malicious cyber activity targeting sectors such as education, healthcare, emergency management, and water/wastewater systems. Because higher education institutions are among the named targets, we ask all students, faculty, and staff to remain especially vigilant.
NYC Cyber Command has observed threats including DDoS attacks, spear phishing, and attempts to compromise operational technology. To help protect our campus systems and your personal information, please review and follow the recommendations below:
Key Security Recommendations
- Be cautious with emails:
Do not click on links or open attachments in emails that appear suspicious—even if they seem to come from someone you know. Report suspicious emails to the CUNY helpdesk or IT security team. - Use strong and unique passwords:
Avoid default or reused passwords. Update passwords regularly and store them securely. - Enable Multi‑Factor Authentication (MFA):
MFA adds an additional layer of protection and helps prevent unauthorized access. - Watch for unusual account activity:
If you notice unexpected prompts for MFA or any irregular login alerts, report them immediately. - Avoid exposing sensitive systems to the wider internet:
Limit access to critical systems and resources whenever possible. - Report suspicious system behavior:
If you observe any unusual activity in campus applications, workstations, or lab equipment, notify IT without delay.
Why This Matters
Hacktivist groups and cybercriminals frequently target public-sector organizations, including colleges and universities. Staying alert and practicing good cybersecurity habits helps protect you, your data, and our entire York College community.
If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact the York College IT Service Desk.
Thank you for your attention and cooperation in keeping our campus safe.
Sincerely,
Office of Information Technology
