This special event will take this evening, March 12, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Africana Resource Center at York College (94-20 Guy R. Brewer Blvd., Jamaica, NY 11451) Cpl. Roach, a South Ozone Park resident, proudly served in the all-Black 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, helping clear massive WWII mail backlogs in England and France under the unit’s motto, “No mail, low morale.” Her daughter, Afi Phoebe, recalls her strolling the French Riviera and receiving love letters from her future husband, Master Sgt. John Roach—correspondence that led to their 1945 wedding in Rouen, France, before she sailed home on the RMS Queen Elizabeth. Roach’s legacy, including battalion newsletters and personal correspondence, will be on display. We look forward to seeing you and members of your organization in attendance!
