NLNY strives to instill the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for effective political engagement and community organizing. NLNY is open to all students, regardless of sex, gender, or identity The goals of the NEW Leadership® New York program are to increase participants’: - Knowledge of political and policy-making processes, and ways by which citizens influence and shape the public policy process
- Recognition of Leadership self efficacy and approaches of political and policy leaders
- Understanding of the critical importance of diversity in enriching democratic political participation
- Awareness and preparedness of career options in the fields of politics and public policy
- Skills of developing and organizing a campus or community engagement project
NEW Leadership® is a non-partisan program that provides the tools to become effective leaders in the political arena regardless of academic interests or career path. NEW Leadership® participants are expected to attend all Summer Institute

Graduates of NLNY Institute join the national NEW Leaders® Network. Eligibility and Application Process - The program is open to undergraduate students (or recent graduates) enrolled in any New York State college of university AND to all New York State residents who are enrolled as undergraduates in out-of-state schools
- Applicants should demonstrate interest and experience in developing leadership skills and are expected to have at least 3.0 GPA. Under certain circumstances, applicants with GPA below 3.0 will be considered, however, they must provide strong justification for why they should be considered
- The program is provided free of charge to all participants
- Applications and all supporting documents must be submitted to the Center for Women in Government & Civil Society
- The Center for Women in Government & Civil Society strongly encourages women from all backgrounds-including people of color, LGBTQ+, gender non-conforming/non-binary individuals, people with disabilities, first generation college students, and international students-to apply to the NEW Leadership® New York
