In March, both President Reagan and Pope John Paul II survived assassination attempts 3 weeks apart from each other. Then in July, in the wedding that captivated the world, Prince Charles married Lady Diana at St. Paul’s Cathedral in front of 3,500 guests and 750 million live viewers. MTV premiered on TV on August 1. On August 12, IBM’s first mass-market personal computer was unveiled at a base price of $1,565. On December 11, Muhammad Ali fights his last fight in the Bahamas.
